THROUGH EYES OF STEEL: BIRMINGHAM 2020 PROTESTS IN PORTRAIT

A Monochromatic Multimedia Documentary

Own a Piece of Birmingham’s Modern History

Birmingham. Protest. Presence. Preserved.

Through Eyes of Steel is a documentary photography collection capturing the defining protest gatherings in Birmingham, Alabama in 2020. Through more than 200 black-and-white images, the book documents families, children, community leaders, and neighbors who gathered, spoke, marched, and remembered.

Organized into four movements — They Meet. They Speak. They March. The Call. — the collection walks you through the unfolding of civic presence from arrival to reflection.

Shot entirely in monochrome, the images remove distraction and center expression, strength, conviction, and intergenerational unity.

This is more than a coffee table book. It is a visual archive of civic presence. Designed to be displayed. Revisited. Passed down.

The Context

Birmingham is a city shaped by steel — forged under heat and pressure. But Birmingham was never shaped by metal alone. It has been forged, again and again, in another furnace—the enduring struggle for justice, dignity, and equality as both a battleground and a birthplace of the Civil Rights Movement.

Through Eyes of Steel invites you to witness a city still burning—not just with industry, but with the fire of resistance, resilience, conviction, and solidarity.

A city gathered. Families stood together. Children watched history unfold. This book preserves those moments with clarity and intention.

This is not commentary. This is not opinion. This is documentation, a visual archive, and preservation.
